Rudolph made his television debut on NBC in 1964, when Rankin/Bass produced a stop motion animated TV special of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer that became a popular hit in itself. This version was re-broadcast annually many times over the years, even after it was finally released on video and then DVD. It now airs several times during the Christmas season (on CBS rather than NBC), making it the longest-running TV special in terms of consecutive years. A small bit of trivia regarding the 1964 production, the Roman Numeral Date given at the beginning of the show is in error, missing the second “M”, (MCLXIV) which equates to the year 1164. It should have read MCMLXIV to be correct. In 1976, a sequel to the Rankin-Bass original special was produced, entitled Rudolph’s Shiny New Year, and then a third in 1979 entitled Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July. Then in 2001, a fourth in the series was released titled Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys.

@Spicygummybears LOL great answer. I just like making fun of this because everyone is a drama queen. Although the boat that can’t float but sink is really useless.

  2. Spicygummybears says:

@redeyedbandit1251 If you had a bird that could swim, you’d have a pengiun. XD

I’ve actually have seen a few of the original puppets for sale at auction. They were brought in by the son of either Rankin/Bass (I forgot). He owned 3 of them and had th elf who wanted to be a dentist, one of the misfit toys and the Lion (King of the misfit toys). I really wanted “The Dentist” for my wife and kids (ok, for me too!) but I bowed out around 7G’s. The final price was $14,500 plus 20% auction fee. Not bad for an old puppet!

Is it me or does Charlie in the Box look like TV Judge Greg Mathis?

  9. katz10089 says:

Is this drawn or made with clay? Also is it just me or is it every rudolf movie they make except for one have to do with rudolf being sad?

@luv4friends192 NPR is a radio program that 2:59 and with medtronics (symbolic of the doctoring by electronics) catches and doctors the minds to reap from listeners strengths and turn them into remote control human toys. I hate NPR and the many tactics they use under the guise of delivering information. One of many programs found here is the lulling sequence, prep for doctoring the thoughts. NPR in a communist country would be lined up and brutalized and then killed, so deserving.

  11. Nueroactive says:

:31 A radio controller =charlie in the box. 1:09 A pack full of human toys to control means a sack for your “wonderful” day.(This was from the playing in snow scene)

@thecrazyloudgirl “Her misfit problem is never explained on the special, but was revealed on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! news quiz show (broadcast December 8, 2007). The show revealed that Rudolph’s producer, Arthur Rankin Jr., says Dolly’s problem was psychological, caused from being abandoned by her mistress and suffering depression from feeling unloved.”
But I think that I like embabix ‘s answer better.

  16. Skwisgaar4256 says:

@thecrazyloudgirl She was abandoned by her mistress and went through depression.

  17. mityquinn1998 says:

Its because shes a red head

  18. peaceloveErica21 says:

Dolly is perhaps there because she feels she is unloved (as King Moonracer explains about misfits) and perhaps the little girl who onced played with her is now grown up and Dolly now sits in a box unwanted waiting to be loved by another little girl again “In certain circles” this explanation is offered and widely accepted by Misfit Philosophers. In 1998 CVS released beanies toys The Misfit Doll tag reads “I’m a little rag doll who just wants a friend. I think that will help my broken heart mend”

  19. littlebit19801 says:

For all who wonder what’s wrong with the dolly, I’ve heard people say she is a transgendered doll, *accidently given the wrong anatomical parts*.

  20. DisneyGirl31323 says:

A few things that have bothered me about this movie (even tho it’s like my fave movie EVER!!!)…
    1. WHAT’S WRONG WITH THAT DOLL?!?!?!?!
    2. THE bird flies in the end so idk what his problem is…
    3. (not in this scene) OK, so they all make fun of Rudolph for his nose, but they don’t say a word about Fireball’s hair (in the beginning is when you see him)

  21. ilovekane19 says:

I was thought it was because its because she says How do you do not mommy

  22. MOZARTJOKAN says:

now who wouldn’t want a spotted elephant? it’s awesome!!!

  23. Buffalobigboy69 says:

@windstorm1000 Your very right. This song always moved me as a kid.

  24. jayzypher says:

@thecrazyloudgirl She was made with flammable material and painted with led paint.
